Minimum Age

If you are on the hunt for an entry-level job at Lowes, please note that you must be 18 years or older for most hourly Lowes store jobs. However, this can vary by location. Some Lowes stores in certain states will hire at 16, but no stores will hire at 15 years of age or younger. 

You will want to check the job listing for the desired role to determine what the minimum age requirement is for the specific job.

Because the general minimum age to work at a Lowes store is 18, anyone 17 years old or younger may not be able to work there.

Lowes is a company that is open to entry-level workers. This means that you can apply with no previous work experience and still get hired. It is the perfect job opportunity for anyone who is looking for their first job out of high school.

Cashiers at Lowes must be able to help customers find items and answer inquiries. In addition to having to be 18 years of age, cashiers must also be able to lift bulky merchandise and stand for prolonged periods of time. 

Working at Lowes as a customer service associate means you will be assisting customers and stocking shelves, which means you should be able to lift and move heavy merchandise with ease. Customer service associates are typically assigned to specific departments, for which they are given proper training.

To be a customer service associate, you must be 18 years or older, have at least six months of computer experience, and at least six months of mobile phone experience. 

Receivers/stockers must be able to successfully stock and distribute store items. They are expected to greet and assist customers with finding merchandise. To work at Lowes as a receiver/stocker, you must have basic reading, writing, and math skills in addition to being at least 18 years of age. 

Part of Lowes’ employment hiring process is a mandatory Lowes Online Assessment. Candidates must take it immediately after applying and must pass the test to be considered to become a Lowes employee. The tests take up to 30 to 40 minutes to complete. 

Exceptions for Working at Lowes

You should not apply to Lowes if you are not okay standing for long periods of time or cannot lift a lot of weight. Their jobs are heavily based on lifting at least 25 pounds without assistance.  

As previously mentioned, you should not apply if you have not turned 18 years old yet and the job description you are eyeing requires someone who is 18 years old. Minors under 16 years of age are prohibited from working at any Lowes stores.

Lowes also requires its prospect to pass a couple of tests before being considered for hire. Lowes’ pre-employment drug screening is a five-panel drug test that detects Cocaine, Cannabinoid, PCP, Methamphetamine, and Opiates. Keep in mind that Lowes adheres to each state’s statutory requirements as well as the federal law on drug testing at work.

Lowes candidates must also agree to a criminal background check. If you cannot pass the drug test and a criminal background check, you will not be allowed to work for Lowes.
